Defending Champion Iga Świątek Knocked Out of Wimbledon in Major Third-Round Upset

One of the biggest shocks of this year's Wimbledon Championships unfolded on Saturday as defending women's singles champion Iga Świątek crashed out of the tournament after suffering a straight-sets defeat to Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. The stunning result has dramatically opened up the women's draw and ended Świątek's title defence much earlier than expected.

Playing on Centre Court, the 21-year-old Alexandra Eala produced one of the finest performances of her career, defeating the Polish star 7-6 (11-9), 6-2. The opening set lasted 84 minutes and proved to be the turning point of the match, with Eala holding her nerve in a tense tie-break before dominating the second set with fearless, aggressive tennis.

The victory is historic for the Philippines, as Eala became the first Filipino player to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon and the first from her country to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam singles event in the Open Era. The emotional youngster dedicated the achievement to her family and supporters back home after one of the biggest wins of her career.

Świątek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, struggled to find her rhythm throughout the contest and committed a series of costly unforced errors. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, the defending champion was unable to recover after losing the marathon first set.

The surprises did not end there. Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina also exited the tournament after losing in straight sets to Belgium's Elise Mertens, making it one of the most dramatic days of the women's competition so far. With two of the leading contenders eliminated, the race for this year's Wimbledon title has become even more unpredictable.
