Davido Explains FIFA World Cup Tribute to Kidnapped Oyo School Victims
Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has explained the reason behind his emotional tribute to kidnapped schoolchildren during his performance at the FIFA World Cup, saying he could not remain silent while children continue to be abducted in Nigeria.
According to the singer, many people choose not to speak openly about the country's security challenges in an attempt to protect Nigeria's image. However, he believes there is no image worth protecting when innocent children are being kidnapped.
"A lot of people don't really want to talk about what is going on in our country simply because they want to protect the image. But there's no image to protect if little kids are being kidnapped."
Davido said that although performing on one of the world's biggest stages was a proud moment, he felt it was equally important to use the opportunity to draw global attention to the crisis affecting communities back home.
"As much as I was happy to perform at the World Cup, we also have to understand that there are things going on back home in our country, and we have the power to let the world know through our own means."
The award-winning artist explained that music and live performances are the tools he has to raise awareness about issues that matter.
"When I say our own means, where is my power? My power is in music and performances."
Davido added that the kidnapped students and their teachers had still not been found at the time, making it even more important for him to use his global platform to amplify their story.
"These students and teachers have been missing and still haven't been found. So yeah, I used my platform to project what's really going on."
His comments have sparked conversations about the role of celebrities in advocating for social issues. While many have praised him for using his international platform to highlight Nigeria's security challenges, others continue to debate the responsibilities of public figures in addressing national concerns.
