Binance Operations in Nigeria Are Illegal – Nigeria’s SEC

The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has clarified that Binance Nigeria is not registered with the SEC and is not subject to its regulation, making its operations in Nigeria illegal.

According to a statement on its website, the SEC noted that Binance Nigeria Limited, a branch of the global cryptocurrency exchange Binance, has been actively advertising its web and mobile platforms to Nigerian citizens.

However, the SEC emphasized that operating in Nigeria without registration is unlawful and advised Nigerians to exercise caution when transacting with unregulated platforms.

This announcement comes amid ongoing global regulatory scrutiny, including a U.S. SEC lawsuit against Binance.US, accusing the platform of running an unauthorized securities exchange. Additionally, the Nigerian Finance Act of 2023 imposes a 10% tax on digital assets.

What Investors Should Know

The SEC’s warning serves as a reminder of the risks associated with the rapidly evolving and volatile cryptocurrency market. The agency’s actions also reflect a global trend of regulators taking a closer look at the challenges posed by digital assets.

Implications

The SEC has pledged to keep the public informed on its efforts and collaborate with other national regulatory bodies to establish comprehensive rules for the cryptocurrency sector.

By staying updated on developments from the SEC and other authorities, Nigerian investors can navigate the cryptocurrency market with greater confidence and protect their investments by choosing reputable, regulated platforms.
