WhatsApp Introduces Usernames: What the New Privacy Feature Means for You

WhatsApp is preparing one of its biggest updates in years with the introduction of usernames, a feature designed to let people connect without sharing their phone numbers. The change marks a significant shift from the app's long-standing phone number system and is aimed at giving users greater control over their privacy.

Instead of giving out your mobile number every time you want to chat with someone new, you'll be able to use a unique username. Once the feature becomes available in your region, friends, businesses and new contacts can reach you using that username, helping to keep your personal phone number private.

According to WhatsApp, users can begin reserving their preferred usernames as the feature rolls out gradually across the world. The company says this early reservation process is intended to give people the opportunity to secure the username they want before the full launch reaches every country.

The update is expected to benefit people who frequently communicate with strangers online, including business owners, content creators, freelancers and community managers. Rather than sharing a personal phone number publicly, users can simply provide a username while still enjoying WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption.

WhatsApp has also introduced additional safeguards to reduce impersonation and protect user identity. Public figures, organisations and businesses will be able to reserve verified usernames, while an optional security feature known as a username key adds another layer of protection when someone contacts you for the first time.

Although the feature is being released in phases, users are encouraged to update to the latest version of WhatsApp and watch for an in-app notification confirming when username reservation becomes available in their country. Once fully rolled out, the update is expected to change how millions of people connect on one of the world's most popular messaging platforms.
