Keyamo Explains How Private Jet Landed on Construction Road Instead of Asaba Airport Runway

A private jet that stunned many Nigerians after landing on a construction road instead of the runway at Asaba Airport has become the focus of a major aviation and security investigation. The unusual incident occurred on 10 June, when the aircraft, while attempting to land at Asaba Airport, touched down on a nearby road under construction. After safely dropping off its passengers, the aircraft later departed for Lagos without obtaining the required regulatory clearance, raising serious concerns among aviation authorities.

Providing a fresh update on the investigation, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said preliminary findings indicate that the aircraft did not suffer any mechanical failure. According to the minister, the pilots had been cleared by the control tower to land at Asaba Airport but mistakenly identified the nearby construction road as the runway and landed there instead.

Keyamo explained that the aircraft was able to take off again because there was no technical fault. However, he stressed that the circumstances surrounding the incident have gone beyond aviation safety and are now being treated as a national security matter. He disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant agencies are investigating the incident, with reports expected to be submitted to the Presidency.

Earlier, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) grounded the aircraft, suspended the operator's Permit for Non-Commercial Flight and placed the flight crew under regulatory review. The operator, VMO Aero, has said the crew initially aborted an unstable approach before the aircraft eventually landed on the roadway and has pledged full cooperation with investigators.

Although no injuries or property damage were reported, the incident has reignited discussions about aviation safety, pilot situational awareness and airport security procedures in Nigeria. The outcome of the ongoing investigations is expected to determine whether further regulatory or legal action will be taken against those involved.
