Youth Minister Clarifies Remarks on Proposed NYSC Uniform, Says No Final Decision Has Been Taken
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified that the Federal Government has not approved the replacement of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with Adire fabric, following widespread reports suggesting that the decision had already been taken.
The reports emerged after the minister's appearance on Channels Television's The Morning Brief, where he discussed the Federal Government's ongoing reforms of the NYSC scheme. During the interview, Olawande mentioned Adire and Ankara while explaining some of the proposals being considered as part of the reform process. His comments were widely interpreted as confirmation that Adire had been adopted as the new NYSC uniform.
Responding to the reactions later in the day, the minister said his remarks had been misunderstood. He explained that Adire was mentioned only as one of several ideas currently under consideration and stressed that no fabric or design has been officially approved to replace the existing khaki uniform. According to him, any eventual decision will follow extensive consultations and will be guided by factors such as professionalism, durability, affordability, national identity and support for local industries.
The clarification has not diminished public interest in the proposed reforms. The broader NYSC reform agenda includes plans to strengthen skills development, improve graduate employability, promote entrepreneurship and make the scheme more responsive to Nigeria's current economic and social realities. Other proposals under consideration include aligning corps members' places of primary assignment with their academic disciplines and reviewing deployment policies in areas facing security challenges.
While the debate over the NYSC uniform continues, the minister urged Nigerians not to lose sight of the wider objectives of the reform programme. He reaffirmed that no final decision has been made on replacing the khaki uniform and assured the public that any future changes would be announced only after due consultation and approval.
