Tinubu Orders FCCPC to Probe Meta, Google, X, Other Big Tech Firms and AI Platforms Over Alleged Exploitation of Nigerian Media Content

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major technology companies, including Meta, Google, X (formerly Twitter), and several artificial intelligence (AI) platforms over allegations of exploiting content produced by Nigerian media organizations.

The investigation is expected to examine whether these global technology companies are using news content created by Nigerian publishers without providing fair compensation, as well as assess their compliance with Nigeria's competition and consumer protection laws.

The move reflects growing concerns about the relationship between digital platforms and local media, particularly as AI tools and search platforms increasingly rely on online news content for search results, summaries, and AI-generated responses.

If the probe confirms violations, the Nigerian government could introduce new regulatory measures aimed at protecting local publishers, promoting fair competition, and ensuring that media organizations receive appropriate value for their content.

The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for the operations of major technology companies in Nigeria and may influence future policies governing digital platforms and artificial intelligence within the country.
