Man Arrested After Allegedly Staging His Own Kidnap to Extort Family in Ondo

What began as a desperate kidnapping case in Ondo State has taken a dramatic turn after police uncovered what they describe as a carefully planned hoax. Authorities say a 33-year-old man allegedly faked his own abduction in an attempt to obtain money from his family, leading to his arrest along with an alleged accomplice.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, the incident was reported on July 5 after the suspect's mother informed officers that her son, Olawale Sikiru, had been kidnapped while travelling to Igbara-Oke for work. Shortly afterward, the family reportedly received calls demanding ₦1 million for his release, prompting detectives to launch an intelligence-led investigation.

Police said investigators combined intelligence gathering with forensic analysis of the phone number used to demand the ransom. The operation led to the arrest of Sikiru on July 7, where detectives allegedly discovered that the reported kidnapping had been orchestrated by the supposed victim himself. Before the scheme was exposed, the family had already paid ₦50,000 as part of the demanded ransom.

Further investigations resulted in the arrest of 23-year-old Agbelusi Ayomide, who police allege conspired with Sikiru by providing him with a place to hide while the fake kidnapping was being carried out. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals suspected to have played a role in the plot. The suspects are expected to be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for exposing the alleged scheme through intelligence-driven policing. He also warned that staging kidnappings or assisting such crimes diverts security resources from genuine emergencies, inflicts emotional and financial hardship on families, and carries serious legal consequences.

The case has once again highlighted the growing challenge posed by false kidnapping claims at a time when security agencies are battling real abduction cases across the country. Police have urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information that can support ongoing efforts to tackle crime and protect lives.

Should Nigeria introduce stiffer penalties for individuals who stage kidnappings, given the strain such incidents place on families and security agencies?
