SOKAPU Heads to Court Over Mary Habila's Death, Seeks Independent Autopsy and ₦20bn Compensation

A fresh legal battle has emerged over the death of Mary Habila, with the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) asking the court to order an independent autopsy and award ₦20 billion in damages.

The association argues that unanswered questions surrounding Habila's death make a forensic examination necessary before the case can be brought to a close. It is urging the court to ensure that medical experts independently determine the exact cause of death.

Beyond the request for an autopsy, SOKAPU wants security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The suit also names Minister of Works David Umahi, alongside other government officials connected to the matter.

According to the association, establishing the facts through an independent investigation is essential to maintaining public confidence in the justice process, particularly in a case involving a high-ranking public official.

The group is also demanding ₦20 billion as compensation, arguing that the deceased's rights were violated and that those found responsible should be held accountable under the law.

The case has continued to attract nationwide attention, especially after earlier calls by both the Ebonyi State Police Command and Minister David Umahi for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Reports, however, indicate that disagreements over the procedure have delayed progress in the investigation.

The court is expected to consider the applications in the coming days as legal proceedings begin.
