Federal Polytechnic Oko Distances Itself from Fatality Reports After Hostel Collapse

The management of Federal Polytechnic Oko has dismissed reports claiming that students died after the collapse of a private hostel located near the institution, insisting that the information being circulated is inaccurate.

The incident involved Elite Five Star Lodge, an off-campus residential building situated in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. Emergency responders and residents quickly mobilized to the scene to assist those trapped and secure the area following the collapse.

Responding to widespread reports on social media and in some news outlets, the institution clarified that no student deaths have been confirmed in connection with the incident. School authorities urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed claims while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure. Officials have also ordered inspections of the affected property and surrounding buildings as part of efforts to strengthen safety standards and prevent similar incidents.

The collapse has renewed concerns about the structural integrity of privately owned hostels around tertiary institutions, with many stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations and routine safety inspections.

Authorities say more details will be made available as investigations progress.
