Powerful 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Colombia, Death Toll Rises to 77
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck western Colombia, leaving at least 77 people dead and causing widespread destruction across several parts of the country.
The earthquake struck early Monday, with its epicentre located near San José del Palmar in Chocó province. The tremor was felt across a large part of Colombia, including major cities such as Cali, Pereira and Manizales.
The hardest-hit areas include Risaralda province, where authorities have reported the highest number of fatalities. Buildings have collapsed in several locations, leaving some people trapped beneath the rubble as emergency teams continue search-and-rescue operations.
Authorities have requested additional rescue personnel from Bogotá and MedellÃn to assist teams already working in affected communities. Damage assessments are also continuing as officials try to determine the full extent of the disaster.
The earthquake has also disrupted transportation. Colombia's civil aviation authorities suspended flights at several regional airports while facilities were inspected for possible structural damage.
Although the earthquake was powerful enough to cause significant destruction, authorities said there was no tsunami threat associated with the event. However, emergency teams remain on alert as aftershocks and further structural risks continue to pose challenges.
The disaster comes as Colombia's newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella faces his first major national emergency. His administration is coordinating the response as rescue workers continue efforts to reach affected communities.
With the situation still developing, authorities are expected to provide further updates on casualties, injuries and infrastructure damage as rescue operations progress.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating earthquake.
What should be the immediate priority after a disaster of this scale: rescuing trapped victims, restoring essential services, or assessing damaged buildings?
