NELFUND Loans: What Graduates Need to Know About Repayment

Nigerian graduates who benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) will not be required to repay more than 10% of their monthly salary under the current repayment framework.

The provision is contained in the student-loan framework established by the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024, with NELFUND's own terms stating that 10% of a beneficiary's monthly salary will be deducted at source for repayment.

However, repayment does not begin immediately after graduation.

According to NELFUND's official FAQ and loan terms, a beneficiary who participates in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is expected to begin repayment two years after completing the NYSC programme. The same two-year period applies after an approved NYSC exemption.

Once repayment becomes due and the beneficiary is employed, the employer deducts the required amount directly from the salary. For example, a graduate earning a gross monthly salary of ₦200,000 would have a maximum deduction of ₦20,000, while someone earning ₦500,000 could have up to ₦50,000 deducted.

The 10% figure is therefore a maximum monthly deduction, rather than an additional charge on top of the loan.

NELFUND also provides for beneficiaries who become self-employed. Such beneficiaries are required to update their employment and business information through the student-loan portal and comply with the applicable repayment requirements.

For graduates who remain unemployed, the repayment situation is different. Recent reporting on the framework states that beneficiaries without income can seek an extension, subject to the requirements prescribed by NELFUND.

The student-loan programme has continued to expand, with NELFUND reporting 1,635,676 processed applications and approximately 850,000 unique beneficiaries as of July 3, 2026. The Fund also reported total disbursements of about ₦303.9 billion.

For students considering the scheme, the important point is that the loan is interest-free, but it remains a financial obligation that must eventually be repaid under the applicable terms. NELFUND's official student-loan portal also confirms that repayment is scheduled to begin two years after NYSC.

Understanding these conditions before taking the loan can help students make informed decisions about how much they need and what the eventual repayment could mean for their income after school.

The real question isn't just how much NELFUND can help you pay today. It's how comfortably you can manage the obligation when repayment eventually begins.
