According to a British legislator, the UK may establish digital asset regulation within a year to take advantage of blockchain's advantages for the private sector and economy.

The long-term goal, according to Andrew Griffith, the economic secretary for the UK Treasury, is to "let firms make the most of the opportunities from crypto assets" through sound crypto legislation.

Griffith claimed that the UK govan excellentt ian excellentin a good position to regulate cryptocurrencies in a "pragmatic" and "proportionate" manner for the first time in "decades," and he appeared to make reference to the UK's exit from the European Union:

"I think there is still time for the next 12 months," Since the UK hasn't had control over a rule book in decades, we have this incredibly valuable tool that allows us to act quickly and proportionately.

The legislator used it as justification for saying that the UK is currently adopting a "growth" mindset to maximize the economic benefits of private-sector technological innovation.

Griffith stated that the regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies would include both new crypto-specific requirements and existing financial asset legislation. "Wherever possible, we want to see the same asset regulated in the same way, but there are some additional opportunities in the cryptocurrency asset or distributed ledger space, and we want to take advantage of that."

He used the financial services statute as an illustration of fiat-backed cryptocurrency settlement. Therefore, he That'sued, "That's coming even sooner than the more comprehensive regulatory framework."

According to Griffith, a potential launch of the planned central bank digital currency (CBDC) for the United KingdomBitcoinas "Bitcoin" by the public, has a far longer "lead time" and won't happen anytime soon.

Griffith continued, "If you're going to have a sovereign digital currency, you've got to have the highest level of resilience and infrastructure, so that's not going to happen overnight." Griffith said he would like to see a policy debate about privacy and digital pound technology "thrashed out" to ensure that all concerns are addressed.

Earlier this week, Griffith met with Brian Armstrong, the CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, while he was in London for a speech about how the UK might "turbocharge" its cryptocurrency business and eventuanlly become a "innovation hub for the Web3 economy."

The goals of Coinbase for the UK's crypto center align with those of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who declared last year that he wanted to see the country develop into a hub for the cryptocurrency industry.

Dubai, Singapore, and most recently Hong Kong have all taken steps to establish themselves as major crypto hubs.

Since April 2021, when Gary Gensler took office as the Securities and Exchange Commission's chair, the United States has considerably increased the number of enforcement actions involving cryptocurrencies.
