Bitcoin Price Recovers Sharply After Major Sell-Off

After plunging as low as $49,000 on August 5, Bitcoin quickly rebounded to $55,700, signaling renewed investor confidence in the cryptocurrency market.

Despite the volatility, U.S. Bitcoin and Ether ETF trading volumes soared near $6 billion on the same day. According to CoinGlass data, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) accounted for more than half of the $5.24 billion daily volume. Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust (ETHE) and BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) collectively recorded $715.3 million in trading volume. Overall, the two major spot cryptocurrency ETFs reached a combined volume of $5.96 billion.

A Bloomberg ETF analyst cautioned earlier on X that heavy trading activity during declining markets often serves as a “reliable measure of fear.” However, he also noted that high volume is beneficial in the long term, as strong liquidity attracts more institutional traders and long-term investors to ETFs even during downturns.

The broader crypto market began its decline after reports surfaced on August 4 that Jump Trading had transferred large sums of Ether to exchanges. The sell-off intensified the following day, triggered by a sharp drop in Japan’s Nikkei index and the rapid unwinding of yen carry trades. Bitcoin briefly fell below $50,000 at the U.S. market open on August 5 before bouncing back.

As of the latest update, Bitcoin is trading at $54,288 on CoinMarketCap.
