After 5 Years, Ethereum Gas Fees Hit a Record Low

Ethereum Gas Fees Hit Lowest Level in 5 Years — Drops to 0.61 Gwei

Ethereum users witnessed a major milestone on August 10, 2024, when gas fees dropped to their lowest point in over five years. At one point, transaction costs hit just 0.61 gwei, making it one of the cheapest days to transact on the Ethereum network.

According to a report from Wu Blockchain, the average network gas fee for the day fell to 2 gwei, while the daily average cost per transaction recorded 3.49 gwei. In U.S. dollars, the average transaction fee dropped to $0.93, marking the lowest point so far in 2024 and the cheapest level experienced since 2019.

Earlier in June, gas fees had already decreased to $1.30, but this latest decline sets a new benchmark.

What Caused the Huge Drop?

Analysts believe several key factors contributed to this record-low gas movement:

1. The Dencun Upgrade (April 2024)

This upgrade significantly improved the network’s efficiency and reduced congestion.

2. Growth of Layer-2 Scaling Solutions

More users are now adopting Layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism.

This aligns with Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin’s vision of scaling through rollups, reducing reliance on the mainnet for everyday transactions.

3. Lower On-Chain Activity

Market conditions and reduced network demand also helped drive fees downward.

What This Means for Ethereum’s Future

Cheaper transaction costs:

  • Make Ethereum more accessible to new users
  • Encourage developers to launch more dApps on the network
  • Strengthen Ethereum’s competitive position against chains like Solana, BNB Chain, and Avalanche

As Layer-2 technology continues to expand and more optimizations roll out, users could see consistently lower gas fees while still enjoying the security of the Ethereum network.
