Spain Cruise Into World Cup Round of 16 with Dominant Victory Over Austria
Spain delivered one of their most convincing performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Austria 3–0 to secure a place in the Round of 16 and reinforce their status as one of the tournament favourites.
The Spanish side controlled the match from the opening whistle, creating several clear chances before Mikel Oyarzabal broke the deadlock with a well-taken finish from a precise cross by Marc Cucurella. Spain continued to dominate possession and dictated the tempo throughout the contest, leaving Austria with little opportunity to mount a meaningful response.
After the restart, Spain maintained their attacking intensity. Pedro Porro doubled the advantage with a powerful header before Oyarzabal completed his brace late in the game, sealing a comprehensive 3–0 victory. The result also means Spain have progressed through the tournament without conceding a single goal, highlighting both their attacking quality and defensive discipline.
Austria, who had impressed during the group stage, struggled to cope with Spain's movement, quick passing and relentless pressure. Despite moments of determination, they were unable to break through Spain's organised defence as their World Cup journey came to an end.
With qualification secured, Spain now await the winner of the Portugal vs Croatia Round of 32 encounter. Based on their latest performance, Luis de la Fuente's side have once again sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament that they remain serious contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
