Argentina Complete Stunning Comeback to Eliminate Egypt and Reach World Cup Quarter-finals

Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3–2 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Egypt, inspired by captain Mohamed Salah, stunned the reigning world champions with a fearless performance and looked on course for one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history before Argentina mounted a sensational late fightback.

The Pharaohs struck first in the 15th minute, when defender Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to head home from a corner, leaving goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with no chance. Argentina had an opportunity to respond just minutes later after being awarded a penalty, but Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly to save Lionel Messi's spot kick and preserve Egypt's advantage.

Egypt doubled their lead in the 67th minute through Mostafa Zico, who finished off a swift counterattack involving Mohamed Salah and Haissem Hassan. At 2–0, Argentina appeared to be heading for a shock elimination.

The defending champions, however, refused to surrender.

Cristian Romero ignited the comeback in the 79th minute, powering home a header from a Lionel Messi delivery to reduce the deficit. Just four minutes later, Messi redeemed his earlier penalty miss by firing past Shobeir to level the score at 2–2, sending the Argentina supporters into celebration.

With extra time looming, Argentina found one final breakthrough. In the 90+2nd minute, Enzo Fernández headed home the winning goal after another dangerous cross into the Egyptian penalty area, completing an extraordinary turnaround and sealing a 3–2 victory.

For Egypt, the defeat was heartbreaking after producing one of their finest World Cup performances. Mohamed Salah led from the front, while goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made several crucial saves, including the stop from Messi's penalty, but the Pharaohs were ultimately unable to withstand Argentina's relentless late pressure.

Argentina now march into the quarter-finals with renewed belief, but the dramatic nature of the victory also exposed defensive vulnerabilities that future opponents will look to exploit. Their resilience kept their title defence alive, yet they know similar slow starts could prove far more costly as the tournament reaches its decisive stages.
