DStv and GOtv Enter New Era as Canal+ Completes MultiChoice Takeover

French media giant Canal+ has officially completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group, bringing one of Africa's largest pay television companies fully under its ownership. The milestone concludes a takeover process that began in 2023 and marks a significant shift for the company behind DStv, GOtv, and Showmax.

With the transaction now complete, MultiChoice becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Canal+, a global entertainment company operating in about 70 countries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The move places one of Africa's most influential media businesses under foreign ownership for the first time since MultiChoice was established in South Africa.

To comply with South African broadcasting regulations, Canal+ has implemented a new corporate structure that separates the country's broadcasting licences into an independently managed entity known as LicenceCo. This arrangement satisfies local ownership requirements while allowing Canal+ to oversee MultiChoice's broader operations across the continent.

Canal+ says the acquisition is designed to strengthen MultiChoice's position in an increasingly competitive entertainment market. The company plans to invest further in African storytelling, expand the global reach of locally produced content through its international distribution network, and provide additional resources to help the business compete with rapidly growing streaming platforms.

For subscribers, there are no immediate changes to DStv, GOtv, or Showmax services. Existing subscriptions, programming, and operations will continue as normal while the integration process begins. However, industry observers say the long-term impact could include new content partnerships, broader international exposure for African productions, and potential changes to pricing, technology, and digital streaming offerings as Canal+ reshapes the business for the future.

The acquisition represents one of the biggest developments in Africa's media and entertainment industry in recent years, creating a combined company that serves more than 40 million subscribers across dozens of countries. As competition from global streaming services continues to grow, the success of this merger could play a major role in shaping the future of television and digital entertainment across the continent.

Do you think Canal+'s takeover will improve DStv and GOtv with better content and innovation, or are you more concerned about possible subscription price increases?
