Argentina Stun England With Dramatic Late Comeback to Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final after producing a remarkable late comeback to defeat England 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final at Atlanta Stadium. The victory sets up a blockbuster final against Spain, while England will now face France in the third-place playoff.

After a tightly contested first half ended goalless, England broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished clinically to give the Three Lions a deserved lead. England looked on course for their first World Cup final in decades as they controlled much of the second half and frustrated Argentina's attack.

However, the match turned dramatically in the closing stages. With just minutes remaining, Enzo Fernández produced a stunning long-range strike in the 86th minute to bring Argentina level after a short corner routine orchestrated by Lionel Messi. The equaliser shifted the momentum completely as the reigning champions pushed relentlessly for a winner.

Deep into stoppage time, Messi once again proved decisive, delivering a precise cross that Lautaro Martínez powered home with a header in the 92nd minute to complete Argentina's comeback. The late goal silenced England's supporters and sealed another memorable World Cup victory for Lionel Scaloni's side.

The result sends Argentina into their second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, where they will meet an in-form Spain side on July 19. England, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as they prepare to face France in the third-place playoff after another heartbreaking exit at the semi-final stage.

With Lionel Messi inspiring another dramatic victory and Argentina showing their trademark resilience under pressure, the defending champions are now just one win away from retaining the FIFA World Cup title.
