No Plan to Demolish 6,000 Houses in Abuja, Says Wike’s Aide

Anthony Ogunleye, Director of Press for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister’s office, has clarified that Nyesom Wike has no plans to demolish 6,000 homes in Abuja.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ogunleye described reports of large-scale demolition in the nation’s capital as “entirely false and without any basis in reality.” He explained that Wike’s remarks about removing unlawful structures did not specify any particular locations.

“We are compelled to address recent news articles claiming that the new FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, is embarking on a demolition spree targeting 6,000 houses across 30 settlements in Abuja as well as Wadata Plaza,” Ogunleye said.

Since taking office, Wike has reassured residents of his commitment to responsible urban development and the welfare of FCT residents, a dedication he first demonstrated as governor of Rivers State.

“It is inaccurate and lacking in credibility to claim that he is planning massive demolitions,” Ogunleye added.

Clarification on Minister’s Vehicle

Ogunleye also addressed reports regarding Wike’s official vehicle. Contrary to claims that it is a N300 million bulletproof SUV, he confirmed that the minister’s car is an ordinary SUV.

“The news about the 300M bulletproof vehicle originated from an online auto site captioned: ‘This 300M Armored Lexus LX 600 fitted with “FCT – 01” reportedly belongs to FCT Minister.’ The Minister clarified during his first project tour at Abuja Metro station on August 23, 2023, that the car is not bulletproof,” Ogunleye explained.

He urged bloggers, journalists, and media organizations to verify information from reliable sources before publishing, warning that fabricated stories only harm public figures’ reputations and create unnecessary anxiety.
